suffers from Elephantiasis—a disease characterized by the thickening of skin and underlying tissues especially in legs. With his swollen legs and skin ulcers, Ezeliardo braved public ridicule when he sought assistance at the AKFI office. “Sa guard pa lang, pinapasok na agad ako,
” were the first words he shared regarding the AKFI staff who interviewed him.
Aside from the remedy to his years of ordeal with Elephantiasis, his visit to AKFI paved the way to his reunion with the family he left 20 years ago in Leyte. During that time, Ezeliardo went to Manila to seek proper medical assistance for his condition. AKFI successfully coordinated with the Philippine National Police to determine his family’s whereabouts—a service that went far and beyond what Ezeliardo expected. “Masaya na ako at ang matagal ko ng hinangad ay nangyari na. Sa TV5 ako nakahingi ng tulong, sa iba pinapalayas ako sa guard palang. Dito maayos ang pag-trato sa akin at hindi nila ako pinababayaan,”
Ezeliardo gratefully exclaimed.
During the two-week treatment at San Lazaro Hospital, Ezeliardo was taught how to treat his wounds to prevent infections. AKFI also shouldered the cost of some of his medications. Although AKFI is not yet fully capable to provide for long-term medication requirements, the Foundation strives hard to provide the necessary support and assistance.
“It would not have been possible for us at Alagang Kapatid Foundation to assist people like Ezeliardo without the support of our generous benefactors and partners. It is our hope at the Foundation that more of our kind-hearted Kapatids will rise to the call of those in most need especially this Christmas season,” said Menchie Silvestre,
AKFI executive director. For more information on how to help out Kapatids in need, the Alagang Kapatid Foundation may be contacted through email addresses [email protected]
