The Armed Forces of the Philippines-Western Command (AFP-WESCOM) is conducting military operations against suspected New People’s Army (NPAs) in Palawan.

This is in response to the recent assaults reportedly staged by the communist rebels in the island.

Government forces are scouring the area, particularly in Barangay Mahilud in the remote town of Bataraza.

The AFP says, the NPAs are under orders to intensify attacks against government troops.

Wescom Spokesperson Captain Cherryl Tindog said, the latest clash occurred on Friday last week between the Philippine Marines and the rebels.

The firefight was triggered by a roadside blast reportedly perpetrated by suspected NPAs against the soldiers.

Another recent attack resulted in the death of two soldiers in Roxas town.

The AFP says, the NPAs are trying to establish their presence in Palawan.
