Earthquake damages buildings in Mabini, Batangas

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Mabini, Batangas on Saturday afternoon.

PHIVOLCS says, the earthquake struck at 3:07 pm.

PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum says, the tremor struck one kilometer southwest of Mabini town and it was caused by the movement of a local fault.

He adds, this is related to the earthquake that rocked Tingloy, Batangas on Tuesday night.

Aftershocks were experienced by residents but Solidum says, there are no tsunami alerts following the quake.

No casualties have been reported so far.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reports, the earthquake resulted in cracks in several buildings.

Mabini town in located in a mountainous area and some landslides were also reported.

Some barangay halls sustained structural damage.

Many residents are staying outside their homes due to fear of aftershocks.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports, two earthquakes actually occured on Saturday afternoon.

It says, the first quake took place at 3:08 pm and the second quake happened at 3:09 pm or just one minute apart.

The tremors were recorded in Mabini and Tanauan City.
