DAVAO CITY—The Department of Agriculture will hand over 300 motorized fishing bancas to fisherfolk in the City in time for the 31st Kadayawan festival from August 15 to August 21.
DA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said bancas will come with a complete set of fishing tools. Each fishing boat, which is made of fiberglass, costs P70,000 each.
“The project aims to improve the lives of the families of fishermen in the city,” he added.
Piñol said they will give one banca to be shared by two families, who will be responsible for taking care of the fishing boat.
“We are targeting the 600 poorest families as beneficiaries of the project,” he said. “This is one of our interventions to address the poverty experienced by the fishery sector.”
Piñol said that he has already talked to Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte about his plan. The Davao City local government will identify project beneficiaries.
During the campaign period, the fisherfolk in the city asked several politicians to give them motor boats that they will use in fishing.
