All-Filipino men’s doubles tennis final set

It's a sure gold for the Philippines in the ongoing 30th Southeast Asian Games men’s doubles tennis competition after the winning tandem of Cagayan de Oro-born Niño Alcantara and Iligan-native Jeson Patrombon crushed Vietnamese power duo Daniel Cao Nguyen and Van Phuong Nguyen, 6-3, 6-1, today in a heart-stopping race to the finals.

An all-Filipino final awaits local tennis fans tomorrow at the Rizal Memorial Complex in Malate, Manila as Alcantara and Patrombon face US-based veteran Filipino netters Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales who sent Quoc Khanh Le and Hoang Nam Ly packing back home to Vietnam earlier today.

Huey and Gonzales swept past Vietnamese players Khanh Le Quoc and Hoang Nam Ly, taking both sets 6-1, 6-3. 

Huey and Gonzales were dominant in the opening set as they swamped their foes. The Vietnamese tandem put up a better challenge in the second as they kept things close in the second set, pulling to within a point, 3-2. The Filipino pair whowever rallied to take the set and seal the win. 

Huey said they performed well and both he and Gonzales are excited to play in the finals.

Gonzales said the Vietnamese team just found their groove in the second set after struggling in the first. The PH pair however stuck to their gameplan to eventually pull off the victory.

The two Philippine team pairs play the finals on Saturday, December 7 with the country already assured of another gold.
