Natural treats for doggiesMore and more dog owners want to include their pets in the Christmas eve and New Year’s eve celebration.

We have been getting messages asking for more recipes for their dogs.

Natural treats for doggies

Here are some recipes from Dog Time that dog owners can try. We put some notes though besides the ingredients.

Dog Time, however, warns that “These recipes do not meet 100 percent of dogs’ nutritional needs. They are intended to help owners prepare the occasional treat, not to serve as the basis of any dog’s diet. If you wish to cook for your dog regularly, please consult a vet or veterinary nutritionist to learn about nutritionally balanced meals.”

Baby food stew

Ingredients:

• 1 cup hamburger meat (Writer’s note: preferably beef ground round we use for spaghetti), stir-fried in 1 tbsp olive oil (optional)

• 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped

• 1/2 cup cooked brown rice (Writer’s note: cooked like congee is best)

• 2 jars of baby food veggies (peas, green beans, carrots, spinach) – (Writer’s note: or boil veggies, then mix in a blender to puree them.)

• 2 tbsp fat-free cottage cheese (optional)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients.  These are pre-cooked anyway. Let the dish cool before serving. Then store leftovers in the fridge.

Pumpsicles

If it is not too cold, you can give FROZEN pumpsicles. But do not give when it is cold in your area as this might cause colds and cough. You can keep this recipe for the summer season.

You can still give this during the cold season by NOT FREEZING the mixed ingredients. Just pour over the dog food after mixing the ingredients. Again, do not freeze if you will give this during the cold months.

Ingredients:

• 16 oz non-fat yogurt, cow or goat

• 1 lb pumpkin puree (not the same thing as pumpkin pie filling)

Directions:

Mix yogurt with pumpkin, spoon into small muffin cups and freeze. You can also spoon immediately over dry kibble.

Diggers’ Dream Muffins

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups oat flour

• 1 cup rolled oats

• 1 cup oat bran

• 2 tsp baking soda

• 1 tsp cinnamon

• 1 egg lightly beaten

• 1/4 cup honey

• 3 tbsp vegetable oil

• 3/4 cup nonfat milk

• 1/4 cup shredded zucchini or carrots

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425.

2. Line muffin tins with foil/paper muffin forms.

3. Mix dry ingredients.

4. In a separate bowl, mix the egg, honey, and oil.

5. Mix the milk in with the dry ingredients, blending well.

6. Mix the carrots or zucchini into the honey mixture, then mix the honey mixture into the flour/milk batter.

7. Put in muffin tins and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. (These muffins freeze well.)

8. To add protein you also have the option of adding an egg or boiled egg to each muffin.

9. Simply place a small amount of batter at the bottom of the muffin tin, place an egg on top, and then fill in with more muffin mix.

“It will blow your dog’s mind, “ Dog Time said.
