PH Navy, STC-Pasig rule Sepak Takraw meet

It was was the first ever true national championships for sepak takraw with teams from North and South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao qualifying for the event hosted by the Rizal Technological University (RTU) at its newly opened wellness gym.

The honor of emerging as inaugural champions in the Philippine Sepak Takraw League-Season 1, Champions’ League went to Philippine Navy (PN) in the men’s division while STC-Pasig ruled the distaff side of the recently-concluded three-day event.

PN swept aside host RTU 21-16, 21-13 in the finals while earlier in the semifinals, it was the same story as the Navymen beat DAVNOR from Mindanao 21-14, 21-18, en route to the finals.

RTU meanwhile came from behind in the semis against Tandag, losing the first set19-21 before regrouping to take the next two sets 21-18, 21- 12 to book its seat in the finals.

“We will send the men’s champion team to the Malaysia Sepak Takraw League tournament on December as an incentive. Definitely the event was a big success in boosting the growing popularity of the sport. At the same time, we made it the test event tournament in preparation for the SEA Games,” said Philippine Sepak Takraw Association Inc. President Karen-Tanchanco Caballero, the moving force behind the growth of the sport in the country.

In the women’s side, STC-Pasig won the crown with a similar straight set victory, 21-13, 21-19 in the finals against Sagay. Earlier, Pasig beat Dipolog 21-12, 21-15 in the semis while Sagay took the other finals seat with a 21-12, 21-10 victory against Tandag to advance to the finals.

Tournament Director Jolly Labay also disclosed that the PSTA is looking at sending the champion teams here to the Arafura Games and the Asian Championships next year.
