With only cycling chief Abraham Tolentino sure to run for president, 46 of 47 qualified national sports associations will be allowed to vote when elections for four vacant positions in the Philippine Olympic Committee are held on July 28.

Tolentino said his bid to run for the POC presidency is on after IOC observer Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra gave his seal of approval of the proceeding that took place yesterday in the POC Extraordinary General Assembly at the Manila Golf Club in Makati.

There are clamors for Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association chief Philip Ella Juico to run as well, but said he is still undecided as he is more focused on the ongoing preparation of national athletes who will being groomed to see action in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

While there are 10 candidates for board members under Tolentino’s ticket, Robert Aventajado of taekwondo will definitely be Tolentino’s choice for chairman.

“Marami sila. I will choose among 10 on who will be my candidate,” said Tolentino after the body excluded karatedo from the voters list.

Clint Aranas (archery) and Steve Hontiveros (handball) are also seen to make their respective bids from the vacant spots of chairman, president and two board member seats.

Accredited arbitrators Teodoro Kalaw IV and Salvador Panga of the Philippine Disputes Resolution Center will compose the three-man election panel with National Collegiate Athletic Association management committee member, Fr. Victor Calvo.

Veteran lawyer Rene Sarmiento backed out.

Karatedo is the only regular member which won’t be allowed to cast its ballot when polls are held on July 28 at the Sheraton Hotel in Vito Cruz, Manila. That’s because there are two groups that are seeking recognition before the POC and the group of Gretchen Malalad has no recognition from the Interntional Federation.

A new group, the Skateboarding and Rollers Sports Association of the Philippines under Monty Mendigoria, was given the green light to vote during the meeting that was presided by Surigao Cong. Prospero Pichay (chess).

Mendigoria’s group were among six NSAs which were questioned because of their eligibility.

But after much debate and after the need for a Securities and Exchange Commission registration was ruled out by Batra, the representatives of surfing, sepak takraw, weightlifting, judo and ice hockey were given the green light to join the polls.

“I’m completely satisfied with the proceedings, with the job that I was given to oversee. Now, the elections will happen on July 28,” said Batra.
