Honoring family caretakers

Today, we pause from our rather unhinged personal and professional schedules and, like others in other continents, mark this day in honoring and celebrating mothers, recognizing the importance of motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in the various rungs of society.

This celebration of and honoring motherhood dates back to the Mother of Gods, Rhea, an event that merges with the springtime, if we thumb through the pages of Greek mythology.

Honoring family caretakers - Mother's Day

In later historical folios, Mothering Sunday used to be celebrated in the United Kingdom as a traditional feast when people visited the church where they were baptized.

Today, it seems like treating mothers to a splendidly opulent breakfast, lunch, or dinner in a stylishly luxurious establishment would be sufficient a substitute for unspoken phrasal verbs of the love of offspring—in that lengthy travel from womb to the present.

Sometimes there are creeping thoughts that an extortionate gift will articulate an unsaid attachment to and friendship with the ascendant.

Some go for cards with expressions of regard and affinity writ in long hand, or a bouquet of the mother’s favorite flowers, pieces of jewelry, or gifting mothers with some days vacation away from the dizzying velocity of the metropolis, or a guided trip to the city for those in the countryside.

While we take exception to the concept that one day is set aside to honor and celebrate mothers—for that affection must be every day 365 days every common year and 366 every leap —we join others in this solicitous observance of Mother’s Day which beats the drum on the spirit of motherhood.

Today may be an assigned day to appreciate, honor, and respect mothers as well as mother figures in life.

And we remember what Joseph Rudyard Kipling, the India-born English journalist, short story writer, poet and novelist said, not without good reason, that “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”
