With the price of chili pepper skyrocketing to more than P1,000 per kilogram, soaring prices of fuel to P60 per liter and rising inflation, how do you become a wise consumer in this time of crisis?

One, you might want to start cutting household expenses. Two, you would find an additional source of income. And three, you would choose to grow his own food.

This is essentially the spirit behind the partnership between East-West Seed Foundation and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The public-private partnership project will help families under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program establish and sustain their household vegetable gardens, with the aim to increase household food security and contribute to the improvement of the overall health of the 4Ps beneficiaries.

The project is composed of a series of vegetable farming trainings and nutrition education campaigns. For those with limited spaces, urban gardening techniques will be taught. Set to be initially launched to 500 households in Antique, Capiz, Batangas, and Cavite, the project will also train and develop 4Ps parents and field workers to become “barefoot technicians” or community gardening champions who are expected to promote the value of household gardening in their respective communities.

“Because of the partnership and shared vision with EWS Foundation, we are looking forward to more healthy communities in the country,” said 4Ps managing director Leonardo Reynoso.

“This partnership will provide EWS Foundation with the opportunity to fulfill its vision of food security and quality nutrition education for Filipino communities. It is our privilege to be a part of this advocacy and we are looking forward to a successful partnership,” EWSF executive director Crisanto Sabino said.

Sabino also said they are also working with CARD-MRI Development Institute and Nestle Philippines to reach more communities and develop more vegetable gardens in public schools. The partnership with CMDI will be initially launched to communities in Laguna.

Meanwhile, the partnership with Nestle Philippines focuses on educating Filipino youth on the importance of vegetable intake for improved nutrition through the school-based vegetable gardening program.
