In celebration of the birth centenary of multi-awarded Filipino writer, historian, journalist, and National Artist of the Philippines for Literature Nick Joaquin, A Portrait of The Artist as a Filipino—one of his classic works and one of the most remarkable Filipino plays – will be presented in a different light through a parody written and directed by the artistic and stage director and Philstage Gawad Buhay Life Achievement Awardee Nonon Padilla.
Entitled Larawan ng Pilipino Bilang Artist(a), Padilla’s comedic sequel of the national artist’s masterpiece, will be produced and staged by De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB)’s pioneering Theater Arts Batch 115 students on Nov. 21 to 24, Nov. 28 to 29, and Dec. 1 at the School of Design and Arts Theater.
The play, which won a Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature in 1988, will be starred by distinguished theater actors Stella Mendoza, Sherry Lara, Bembol Roco, Jaime Yambao, Mosang, Alan Bautista, together with the pioneering acting track apprentices Christian Cusi, Karina Valdez, Kyle Confesor, Herc Ang, and Doori Chin.
Larawan ng Pilipino Bilang Artist(a) will bring Joaquin’s renowned characters to Forbes Park in the ‘70s. In Padilla’s parody, the famous Marasigan sisters Candida and Paula, who flew to New York to escape the Japanese attack in World War II, returned to the Philippines after living abroad for 30 years. Despite being set in a different place, from Calle Real in Intramuros, Manila to an exclusive village in Makati City, and a change in lifestyle, the past will slowly unfold and bring back its horrors, aligned with the horrible realities of the present.
The production will be made possible in collaboration with fellow student-artists from various programs, to include production design, music production, and digital filmmaking.
Larawan ng Pilipino Bilang Artist(a) will have two shows – matinee at 1:00 p.m. and evening at 7:00 p.m..
The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts Theater is located at Pablo Ocampo (Vito Cruz) Street, Malate, Manila.
