Tacloban City”•Police officials in Eastern Visayas have reported a “substantial decrease” in crime volume of 1,013 incidents for the first nine months of 2018.

The Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division showed a comparative report of crime volume of 7,325 for the months of January to September 2018 compared to 8,338 in the same period last year.

“The notable decrease in crimes is attributed to the combined efforts of Philippine National Police Regional Office 8, other law enforcement agencies, local government units, and the community,” said Eastern Visayas Police Director Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos in a statement.

PRO-8’s intensified and continued campaign against criminality and illegal drugs has pulled down the crime volume in the entire region, he added.

Carlos said index crimes showed a reduction of 440 incidents or a rate of 10 incidents per 100,000 population of the 2,113 incidents for the same period in 2018, compared to 2,553 crimes for the same period in 2017.

For the non-index crimes, the decline was at 573 incidents or a non-index crime rate of 12 incidents per 100,000 population of the total 5,212 incidents in 2018, compared to last year’s figure of 5,785.

Index crimes are offenses which are serious in nature and occur with sufficient frequency and regularity, such as rape, murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, carnapping, and cattle rustling.

The non-index crimes are mostly violations of special laws like illegal fishing, logging, gambling, and others, the PNP added.

Meanwhile, Police Supt. Ma. Bella Rentuaya, PRO-8’s public information officer, said the region is already prepared for this year’s observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2.

She said about 1,692 policemen and 2,418 force multipliers are set to be deployed to secure the region’s 278 cemeteries.

Checkpoints will also be in place to secure cemetery-goers around the region.
