Napocor adding 58 MW of new power capacity

State-owned National Power Corp. plans to install 58 megawatts of new capacity in the Small Power Utilities Group or missionary electrification areas this year.

“For our existing power plants, we are targeting to install a total of 58 MW of new capacities this year,” Napocor president Pio Benavidez said.

Benavidez said the capacity addition programs this year until 2020 were laid down to ensure a more reliable power supply and eventually provide uninterrupted 24/7 power in the corporation’s service areas in the off-grid islands.

Napocor earlier this week launched the 24/7 commercial operations of its three power plants in the province of Tawi-Tawi, paving the way for a more sustainable economic development in the province.

“We now have considerable power reserves to our power plants in the municipalities of Balimbing (now called Panglima Sugala), Mapun and Sibutu, hence the extension of its operating hours from 16 hours to 24 hours,” said Nestor Flauta, Napocor’s chief for Napocor SPUG-Mindanao Operations Department.
