Authorities have warned the public, especially students, against scammers using the Internet following the arrest of a man selling stolen bar review materials from a legitimate review center in Las Piñas City.

Lawyer Hazel Riguera, president of Jurists Review Center Inc. based in Las Piñas, filed a complaint against Jake Bryson Dancel of Sitio 3, Bgy. Buttong, Laoag City.

Dancel faces charges for violation of Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act 10175) and the Electronic Commerce Act (RA 8792) under the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

Based on the initial probe of the National Bureau of Investigation’s Special Action Unit and Investigation Service, Dancel was able to access the website of Jurists Review Center Inc. where he stole the bar review materials and has been selling to the public for P2,500 a copy.

The suspect used the Facebook account name “Res Nullius” to advertise his sale of the bar review materials to the Facebook group “Law Student Help Group Philippines.”

Investigators also found out that payments to Dancel were made through money courier Palawan Express.

Authorities then conducted an entrapment operation with an agent buying the bar review materials for P2,500. This led to the arrest of Dancel in his residence in Laoag City last July 4.

The suspect yielded two Toshiba hard drives, an improvised computer set, broadband internet dongle and the P2,500 marked money.

Dancel was set to undergo inquest proceedings before the Laoag Prosecutor’s Office.
