CONGRESSMAN Antonio “Tonyboy” D. Floirendo of the 2nd District of Davao del Norte, avoided being served a warrant of arrest issued by the Sandiganbayan last Feb. 19 by surrendering to the Mati, Davao police Feb. 2 and submitting the above mug shots for booking purposes, police said.
Mati police officer SPO3 Gideon Tambis said in a written statement he endorsed Floirendo to Davao City RTC Executive Judge Emmanuel Carpio at past 4 p.m. for the posting of bail bond.
Floirendo was indicted by the Ombudsman for violation of the constitutional provision barring government officials from having government contracts.
The Ombudsman accused Floirendo of being a sitting congressman and at the same time a member of the board of his family-owned banana production company Tadeco when Tadeco renewed a land-lease deal with the Bureau of Corrections for thousand of hectares of land inside the Davao penal colony.
The Bucor-Tadeco joint venture agreement has been tagged a “sweetheart deal” that allegedly deprived the government of billions of pesos in revenues from land rental and its share in the profit from the bananas sold.
