Perpetual forces a deciding Game 3

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta showed composure that was relatively absent in Game 1 as it downed Arellano University, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, yesterday to arrange one final game in the 93rd NCAA men’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

The Altas, who imploded in a 12-25, 25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9 loss to the Chiefs in the opener Friday, generally looked poised as they weathered most of the rallies thrown against them by the latter to snatch the win that knotted the series at one game apiece and forge a deciding Game 3 on Thursday.

Perpetual Help saw its 20-11 lead in the opening set vanish, but stayed tough in the end to get the set.

After seizing the second set to go 2-0 up, the Altas lost concentration and blew a 21-12 lead that allowed the Chiefs to live for another set.

It turned out to be AU’s last show of resistance as Perpetual Help finished it off.

The problem is always psychological, I just motivated the players during the game,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.

Ridzuan Muhali fired a match-high 15 points, while reigning Rookie MVP Joebert Almodiel and Ronniel Rosales chipped in 13.

Warren Catipay served as the glue that kept Perpetual Helps’ attack together with a match-best 40 excellent sets.

Defense, however, did the trick for the Altas as they slowed down Christian dela Paz, who finished with seven hits after erupting for 24 in Game 1.

We used a different defensive scheme and I’m happy it worked,” said Acaylar.

In the juniors’ division, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta halted to Letran’s giant-slaying ways as it pulled off a 25-16, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20 victory yesterday to move on the verge of claiming a four-peat feat.
