DOH sends nedical teams, assistance to Palawan town

Department of Health (DOH)—MIMAROPA (Oriental/Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo has dispatched various health teams to the municipality of Balabac to bring medicines and medical assistance to affected residents of Barangay Mangseein Palawan, one of the most devastated areas during the onslaught of Typhoons Vinta and Agaton.

The regional office dispatched various teams that includes mental health and psychosocial support staff; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); disease and surveillance; health promotion; health and medical personnel from the Palawan Provincial Health Office and the National Nutrition Council. They will remain in the area for 7 days.

“These teams will provide health assistance to the affected residents of Balabac, assist and monitor the status of the water supply in these areas such as those in deep wells and water pumps to avert the growing cases of diarrhea and cholera in the islands,” Director Eduardo C. Janairo said.

“We need to ascertain that the water being used by residents are safe to drink so as to safeguard the health and well-being of those temporarily residing in evacuation areas, especially the children as they are more prone in contracting illness not only diarrhea but also cough and cold due to overcrowding in rooms,” he added.

The WASH Teams monitored excreta disposal, solid waste management and provided disinfection of evacuation centers.

Janairo said water disinfectants like hyposol and chlorine granules were provided for disinfection of water in the containers. Water sampling was also conducted at various water sources sites to ascertain the potability of drinking water.

He warned residents against drinking boiled water as it maybe unfit and unsafe for one’s health. “You may be drinking leftovers from the boiling process that may contain aluminium particles, corrosions and toxic materials,” Janairo advised

“We are continuously monitoring events and coordinating the health needs of residents in Balabac through the local government unit and Provincial Health Office. Assorted medicines like paracetamol, mefenamic acid, lagundi, etc. and doxycycline including first aid kits were already given to LGUs and.” he added.
