THE Philippine Airlines has announced the scheduled closure of Daniel Romualdez Airport in Tacloban from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. beginning Friday until Wednesday next week will not affect eight PAL flights to and from Manila and Cebu during that period.

The PAL flights operating from Jan. 19 to 24 are PR 2981 with estimated time of departure (ETD) from Manila at 4:45 a.m. and estimated time of arrival (ETA) in Tacloban at 6 a.m.; PR 2987 Manila—Tacloban (ETD 2:20 p.m./ETA 3:35 p.m.);

PR 2988  Tacloban—Manila (ETD 6:40 p.m. /ETA:  7:55 p.m.); PR 2236 Cebu —Tacloban (ETD 8:30 a.m./ETA: 9:15 a.m.); PR 2237 Tacloban—Cebu (ETD 9:35 a.m./ETA 10:20 a.m.); PR 2238 Cebu—Tacloban (ETD 4:30 p.m./ETA 5:15 p.m.), and PR 2239 Tacloban—Cebu (ETD: 5:35 p.m./ETA 6:20 p.m.).

PAL Corporate Communications Department officer and spokesperson Ma. Cielo Villaluna said the following flights would not affect the scheduled closure of the Tacloban Airport imposed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

“The following flights from Jan. 19  to 24 are operational,” she said.

The runway closure in Tacloban is being carried out to give way to runway repair and rehabilitation.

“We will provide updates on the Tacloban runway as we seek the understanding of the flying public on the current situation,” said Villaluna.

CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said the agency ordered the scheduled closure on the said dates to give way for the emergency repair of damaged runway and ensure the safety of aircraft and passengers.

“CAAP ordered the closure to repair potholes on the runway due to the degradation of surface caused by continuous rain in the past weeks,” he said.

The closure of Tacloban Airport runway 18/36 also resulted in the cancellation of several domestic flights of PAL, Cebu Pacific Air and its sister airline Cebgo, and Air Asia to and from Manila and Cebu on Jan. 17 and 18.

“The continuing deterioration of the runway surface had to be addressed immediately for the safety of all passengers and aircraft operating in Tacloban. The public is advised to monitor updates from airlines operating at the airport for flight cancellations and flight arrangements,” said Apolonio.
