BUTUAN CITY—The constituents of Libertad in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, led by its local government leaders and Department of Health officials, came together to celebrate the inauguration of the town’s newly rehabilitated rural health unit.

The community welcomed the unveiling of Libertad Main Health Center, which now has new and improved offices, consultation rooms, treatment rooms, dental clinic, laboratory, labor room, breastfeeding area and birthing clinic. The health center also has a new play area for children complete with books and toys as well as a waiting lounge for the comfortable use of senior citizens.

The renovation helps its doctors, nurses and midwives improve the delivery of healthcare services to a population of more than 100,000 people from 29 barangays. The rural health unit averages around 200 child births per month.

Libertad Main Health Center, recently rehabilitated by BDO Foundation, will help improve the health and well-being of a catchment population of more than 100,000 people in Butuan City and its surroundings.

The improvements in the health center were acknowledged by local officials including DOH local health support division chief Dr. Ernesto Pareja, Butuan city health officer Dr. Joyce Hidalgo and Butuan councilor Cherry Mae Busa, who serves as the chairman of the committee on health.

This project was made possible by BDO Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank. Libertad Main Health Center is one of several health centers rehabilitated by the foundation in Mindanao.

BDO Foundation president Mario Deriquito and BDO Foundation program director Rose Espinosa witnessed the blessing and inauguration of the rural health unit together with BDO Butuan-J.C. Aquino Avenue branch head Janice Arapan, BDO Butuan-Montilla branch head Marty Llorente and One Network Bank (ONB) Langihan branch head Leah Mondejar.

The rehabilitation project is part of BDO Foundation’s efforts to help improve the delivery of primary healthcare services in disadvantaged communities all over the country. The corporate citizenship initiative is in keeping with the foundation’s disaster response advocacy in provinces affected by calamities.

Early this year, thousands of families in Butuan were evacuated when the city was submerged by floodwaters caused by continuous rains. The entire city was placed under a state of calamity.

BDO Foundation’s rehabilitation program is backed by BDO and ONB branches, which provide support by recommending health centers that need assistance and coordinating with local government officials.
