Sports leaders protest

THERE is a need for the International Olympic Committee to be properly informed that something is ailing Philippine sports.

And it is the duty of IOC representative Mikee Cojuangco to tell the IOC about this.

Former Philippines Sports Commission chairman Aparicio Mequi said this after he joined leading sports personalities, headed by former Senator and swimming organizer Nikki Coseteng  to a protest action yesterday at  the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Vito Cruz, Manila.

“I’m appealing to Mikee because she can interact with the IOC, and tell them that something is wrong with the Philippine Olympic Committee here,” said Mequi.

Mequi is part of a group that’s calling for POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco to quit or give up his post and for heads of national sports association to be convinced to cast a vote of no-confidence on him.

“If Mike does not convey that to the IOC, walang mangyayari,” added Mequi at the end of speeches made by members of the group that calls itself the September 21 Movement for Peace and Change in Philippine Sports. Peter Atencio

Not many sports leaders and athletes came to air their grievances at the rally, which was meant for athletes and sports leaders to express their indignation, first on the Philippines’ overall performance in the recent Southeast Asian Games

The group used the theme “Sports Forum: Kilos sa Pagbabago,” for the three-hour forum.

Among those who showed up was group convener Edgardo Cantada, president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF).

Other sports leaders who made their presence felt were Philippine Swimming League’s Susan Papa and Coseteng, their chairman, along with former football chief Johnny Romualdez and dragonboat’s Marcia Cristobal.
