Taguig pupils reap medals in Singapore math tilt

The city government of Taguig on Monday praised 17 public school students in the city after receiving medals and recognition in the 13th International Mathematics Competition held in Singapore.

The awardees were Patrick Welsh Patco, John Albert Mariano, Luis Joseph Flores, Leira Mari Vinarao, Mark Andrei Mallillin, Andrea Monique Bermonte, Derick Timothy Jalando-on, and Micah Bless Requierro, of Taguig Science High School;

Ed Cedrick Julian and Wally Santos, both of Sen. Renato Compañero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School; and Jeremiah Daniel Regalario, of Signal Village National High School.

The students won bronze medals and besting hundreds of students from 12 other countries in the prestigious competition organized by the International Mathematics Contest Union.

Nazka Leosala and Jed Riel Balatan, also of TSHS, and Eisen Shaine Mabborang, Ma. Cecilia Mendoza, Haryana Iris Flores and Izra Myca Uldama, of Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School, also received merit awards.

The Philippine contingent went on to win 245 medals”•33 gold, 66 silver and 146 bronze”•and 111 merit awards, making it the country with the most number of recognitions received. Fourteen other participating countries, with China and Thailand ranking second and third, respectively.

Each participant was only given 90 minutes to answer a challenging 18-item math exam equivalent to 100 points.

The schools expressed their gratitude to the city government, which they said has been supportive of the students and conscious of honing their talents through its programs.

The city government sponsored all the expenses of the students, from the in-house and intensive summer trainings to their plane tickets and hotel accommodation in Singapore.

Mayor Laarni Cayetano assured them the city government would continue to extend its support and “nurture the children because we believe that they are the future.”

“The city is very proud of these students for showcasing to the world that Taguig is filled with bright and talented minds,” Cayetano said.

Last December, three groups of students from Taguig public schools won gold and silver medals at an international science and invention design exposition held in Taiwan. The students were recognized for inventing low-cost and eco-friendly products from recycled materials.

The city government proves that education remains its top priority as it continues to provide free education in its own city-run Taguig City University.

Moreover, free school supplies for students are also distributed every year among 23 public elementary and 13 secondary schools in Taguig before the official opening of classes.
