DISTRICT 1 Councilor Peter Anthony “Onyx” Crisologo on Friday called on his fellow Quezon City lawmakers to back his proposal to protect consumers rights.

He filed Proposed Ordinance 20CC-165 to give Republic Act 7349 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines more teeth.

“As much as possible, we would want to guarantee the protection of the buying public from unscrupulous traders,” Crisologo told the Manila Standard.

“Every retail establishment which registered and doing business in Quezon City must place written notice of its return/exchange policy conspicuously inside the establishment or at its entrance,” he said.

The notice must be made in clear language to ensure that the consumer can understand such notice can be easily seen and read, the councilor added.

“Whereas, some business establishments as a business practice already allow purchasers to return items bought from their stores within seven days purchase, and thus strengthening such business practice into law,” the measure read.

Crisologo said any commercial establishment must inform consumers of their rights as buyers and protect them from unscrupulous retailers who sell defective, broken, and misleading items.

He presented his point of view in batting for the proposal’s passage during the committee on laws hearing.

“Whereas, purchased items must be of satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose bought and the same as described so that consumers will get a full money’s worth of purchase,” the measure added.
