Davao names 18 law scholars

DAVAO CITY—Eighteen Dabawenyos have qualified for the scholarship program offered by the city government to aspiring law students under the Educational Benefit System Unit.

“Those who qualified will get a full scholarship from the city,” lawyer Raul Nadela Jr, the City Mayor’s Office chief of staff, said. 

The law school scholars may enroll in any of the three law schools in the city—Ateneo de Davao University, University of Mindanao, and Jose Maria College.

Albert Abayon, one of those who qualified for the law school scholarship, thanked the city government for the opportunity considering he dreams of becoming a lawyer someday, He admitted his family does not have the financial capability to send him to law school.

“Many thanks for allowing me to avail of this scholarship program of the city government,” Abayon said.

Jecia Anne Opiana, a journalist who also qualified for the scholarship, said the financial grant is a big help.

“I have always wanted to become a lawyer, and I am very happy that I will finally be able to fulfill that dream,” Opiana said.

The city government has allocated P15 million for law school and medical school scholarships. The city has made available 40 slots for law school scholars and 40 slots for medical school scholars.

Nadela said the aspiring scholars should meet all the scholarship requirements, including good grades in college and a certification from the City Social Services and Development Office that the applicant is an indigent.

All scholars who have gained acceptance in any of the law schools will be entitled to free tuition and will receive P8,000 as book allowance.
