The city government of Makati has accepted, and is giving full scholarships to, six college and one senior high school students from war-torn Marawi City who have decided to transfer to the University of Makati to pursue their studies.

Mayor Abby Binay reiterated her call to students affected by the ongoing armed conflict in Marawi and children of soldiers killed in combat to take the opportunity to complete their college education as full scholars of the city government.

“We welcome students from Marawi who would like to pursue their college education as scholars of the city government. This is our simple way of showing that we care for our brothers and sisters whose lives have been disrupted by the conflict in Marawi,” Binay said.

Based on the records of the Office of the Registrar at UMak, as of Tuesday, two transferees from Marawi are now officially enrolled in the university. Five more, including a senior high school student, are completing the enrollment process.

Both officially enrolled students are taking up Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting, one on her third year and the other on her second year.

The other five transferees are two third-year students taking up BS in Management Accounting, a third year BS in Civil Engineering student, a freshman taking up BS in Information Technology Service Management, and a Grade 11 student enrolling at UMak’s senior high school, Higher School ng UMak.

Classes at UMak already started last June 19, but the university’s Admission Office remains open for transferees from Marawi and children of slain soldiers.

Also, given their special circumstance, they will not be required to provide their school credentials right away. In the meantime, an endorsement from their local government or any documents attesting that they studied or came from Marawi will suffice.

Applicants will be interviewed at the Admissions Office and will be endorsed to the University Registrar for validation of their school documents if they have any.  They will also be asked to go over course syllabi to determine the subjects they had already taken, or will be given the option to shift courses if necessary.

For further inquiry and assistance, interested applicants may personally walk in to UMak Admissions Office (ground floor, Building II) or reach them at telephone no. һ883-1860.

In 2014, the city government under the administration of Binay’s brother then mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr.  granted full scholarship to Typhoon “Yolanda” survivors in Leyte and Samar in UMak. One has graduated last April, while three others are currently enrolled at the university.

The transferees were interviewed and asked to go over the course syllabus to check which subjects they had already taken. The students were also given the option to shift from their current course to another.
