Buteyko breathing keeps you fit and healthy

If you breathe between 20,000 to 30,000 times each day, shouldn’t you be concerned with breathing correctly and living more healthily?

While Buteyko breathing is a clinically proven technique that delivers immediate and sustained relief from asthma, allergies, and anxiety, among others, management consultant and graduate school professor Remigio Joseph De Ungria, or Bong to his friends, learned it for another reason: “cure” his seven-year bout with sleep apnea.

Bong not only won his battle against sleeplessness and fatigue due to apnea that kept him breathing from a machine every night, he also brought down his blood pressure to normal levels, ridding himself of maintenance medicines for hypertension that lasted seven years.

FROM MAINTENANCE MEDICINE TO MARATHON. Buteyko breathing method has helped rid Professor Remigio Joseph ‘Bong’ De Ungria of maintenance medicines for hypertension and has allowed him to run his first marathon safely

Diligently practicing Buteyko, he was also able to sustain a new diet, losing 53 pounds in only five months. He has been able to keep the weight off for the past two years.

In October last year, only 100 days after starting running, De Ungria completed his first marathon safely and injury-free while using Buteyko breathing. In February, he ran his first ultra-marathon at age 51, and he’s gearing up for another full marathon this month.

“Fifty kilometers is a stretch for a 51-year-old weekend warrior who started running less than a year ago,” he said, crediting Buteyko breathing for his life and fitness “transformation.”

Buteyko has transformed thousands of lives for more than 50 years with breathing exercises and lifestyle modifications that relieve its students not only of asthma and other respiratory symptoms, but also modern-day health concerns such as emphysema, immune and hormonal imbalance, chronic fatigue syndrome, and stress.

The only complementary treatment endorsed by the British Medical Association for asthma and accepted in Australia, the United States, Canada, and other countries, the method was developed by Russian respiratory scientist, Dr. Konstantin Pavolvich Buteyko, who formulated exercises to restore and retrain breathing to a healthy pattern.

Buteyko breathing is taught in the country by senior practitioner Jac Vidgen, who introduced the method in Asia two decades ago.

“Breathing correctly,” says Vidgen, “could be the most important factor in having a longer and healthier life as it helps increase your immunity and resistance to infections, improve the quality of your sleep and concentration, provide you with more energy, and counter stress.”

Vidgen is also available for private workshops, consultations and online coaching.
