The House of Representatives on Monday night approved on third and final reading a  measure seeking to extend the validity period of driver’s licenses from the current three years to five years.

House Bill 5648 was approved overwhelmingly by a 221- vote, provides penalty for violations of its issuance and application as part of the government’s campaign to eliminate red tape from the processing of government documents.

The measure penalizes the removal from office of an officer who will be found guilty of issuing a driver’s license without the necessary examination and for conniving to the applicant for the irregular issuance of the license.

The bill sanctions officials who will tolerate an applicant who committed misrepresentation by submitting falsified documents and cheating in exams.

The bill provides a fine of P200,000 to an applicant who will cheat in the regular application of driver’s license.
