House probes ‘secret jail’ in Tondo police station

The House of Representatives has conducted an investigation into the alleged secret jail in the Manila Police District (MPD).

Philippine National Police Internal Affairs Service-National Capital Region (IAS-NCR) Director Romeo Sta. Ana told lawmakers that there are no hidden detention spots particularly in MPD’s Station 1 in Tondo, Manila.

He said the ‘temporary lock-up cell’ discovered by the Commission on Human Rights and the National Bureau of Investigation in a surprise inspection last April 27, 2017 were known to the barangay officials.

Capiz Representative Fredenil Castro, however, wondered why the PNP needed to suspend some MPD officials over the controversy if there did not commit any wrongdoing.

At noon time, relieved MPD Station 1 Commander Robert Domingo was answering questions from House members.

Domingo had been temporarily removed from his post after about a dozen men and women were found to be detained in these alleged secret jails.
