Swimmers Ilustre, Pamintuan, Soguilon make waves

San Jose de Buenavista, Antique—On his last day as a junior swimmer, Maurice Sacho Ilustre ended his campaign with a bang.
The 17-year-old Ilustre finished with two more gold medal to become one of the most bemedalled athletes in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa.
 He was joined by La Salle Zobel standout Nicole Meah Pamintuan and Kyla Soguilon, who shone bright in the secondary and elementrary girls’ events.
In athletics, Caviteno Veruel Veradero emerged as the most decorated runner with five golds to his credit.
 Meanwhile, in the ballgames, NCR-Chiang Kai Shek arranged a finals showdown with Southern Tagalog Region’s San Beda-Taytay following a 72-45 triumph over Central Visayas squad University of Visayas in the secondary boys basketball.
The Taytay cagers came up with a 79-61 win over Sta. Clarita International School of Iloilo (Western Visayas).
 In women’s basketball, NCR advanced to the final with Western Visayas after they won Ilocos Region, 75-52. Western Visayas made it after tripping Negros Region, 86-60.
Ilustre captured the secondary 200-meter freestyle gold in record breaking fashion before helping his teams in NCR to the 4×100 meter freestyle honors in the close of the swimming events.
 “Yes. I repeated what I did in the previous years,” said Ilustre.
 Ilustre, an 11th grader at La Salle Zobel started his afternoon by topping the 200-meter backstroke, with a fast clocking of 1:56.44.
This allowed him to erase the course record of 1:58.83 that he set two years ago.
Then, he rallied teammates Patrick Galvez, Ianiko Limfilipino and Keane Ting to 4×100 meter freestyle honors in 3:42.98.
 So far, Ilustre has won the 200-meter butterfly, the 100-meter freestyle and helped teammates win 4×100 meter medley relays  in record-breaking fashions, and the 400-meter freestyle as well.
He also went home with the secondary boys 100-meter butterfly plum.
On the other hand, the 15-year-old Pamintuan ended her stint with six golds, including a record-breaking feat in the 200-meter freestyle.
 She finished ahead of NCR’s Zoe Hilario and Bhay Newberry in 2:10.69.
 Pamintuan surpassed the 2:12.12 that was set by Althea Lim in 1998.
 “Sobrang saya ko. I achieved what I have been training for,” said Pamintuan.
 Then, with Samantha Coronel, Althea Baluyut and Suzanne Himor, Pamintuan bannered NCR to the 4×100 freestyle gold, with Region 6 and Region 4-A at second and third, respectively.
 Her other gold medal conquests include the 100-meter backstroke, the 100-m freestyle, the 200-meter individual medley, the 4×100 meter and 4×50 meter freestyle relays.
 In the elementary girls’ side, Soguilon took her sixth and final gold medal in topping the 50-meter freestyle.
 “I took it fast, I took it fast,” said Soguilon on her time of 29.05 seconds.
 She finished ahead of Kirsten Tan (silver) and Krisha Apin (bronze).
 Her other feats include the 100-meter backstroke, 50-meter butterfly, the 200-IM, the 50-m backstroke and that 4×50 meter freestyle. She took the silver in the 4×100-meter medley.
