KALIBO, Aklan—Officials in the capital town of Kalibo on Monday destroyed hundreds of assorted open-pipe motorcycle mufflers.
Kalibo Mayor William S. Lachica led the traffic management unit in destroying the “noisy” mufflers using a backhoe.
Lachica said the mufflers were confiscated in various operations in the past months.
The mayor said the destruction was to show the commitment of the local government to its campaign against open-pipe mufflers producing loud, irritating sounds. Mufflers are usually customized to amplify engine noise at full throttle.
The confiscation of illegal mufflers in the town follows Municipal Ordinance No. 2016-003. Erring drivers were fined P2,500 and required to reinstall the factory-manufactured and -installed muffler. The ordinance also prohibits selling modified mufflers.
