Trends and inspirations for brides and grooms

Romantic, feminine, princess-like and goddess-like are only some of the adjectives that brides-to-be would want themselves to be described in their wedding dresses. Others however would opt for something more unique, more “them.” Whatever the brides may wish, they always need a reliable and talented designer to make their dream wedding dresses come to life. Bridal trends this season have been showing a lot of floral lace appliqué, interesting three-dimensional embellishments, experimental silhouettes, and sensual details like deep-plunging necklines and thigh-high slits.

Any man in a suit looks great on his wedding day, but the modern groom is also becoming more open and experimental in his choice of suits, tuxedos, and coats. We asked some of the most sought after designers today about their own wedding collections, what inspires them and the usual requests from their clients. If you’re a couple looking for designs and are still confused on what to wear, take inspiration from these designers.

Francis Libiran

“This season calls for a modern and more experimental take on wedding gowns. Most of my newest creations for weddings include gowns with detachable skirts. It looks like one ball gown which the bride can use for the ceremony and transforms to a long gown which they usually use during the reception. Embroidery and embellishments will never fade away but this time, it will be more of a tone-on-tone game. Textures matter more than the sparkly shine of the details.”

What are your inspirations from this season’s bridal collection?

Unparalleled luxury, art deco and geometric patterns.

What are the usual style requests from your clients?

Nat Manilag

“Trends for bridal gowns this season are feathers, plunging necklines, 3D florals, fully sheer silhouettes, low backs and illusion backs.”

What are your inspirations from this season’s bridal collection?

My bridal collection for this season was inspired by a modern princess. I would describe the collection as ultimate in femininity – real wedding dresses that are soft and special to wear with delicate detailing, lots of beading, fringing and lace.

‘The overlay is basically the sartorial hybrid of the princess-y ball gown and minimalist column. You have an extra layer of tulle, lace or organza to give the dress a ball gown feel, but with the slimming effect of a streamlined column or slinky slip silhouette underneath.’

What are the usual style requests from your clients?

My clients want something traditional and timeless with a modern twist and (also) sexy. Naked-looking illusion sleeves allow for the semblance of full coverage, while accents like lace, sparkly sequins, intricate beading and embroidery can add visual effect.

Val Taguba

“The season is truly abuzz with romance. I see ultra feminine brides walking the aisle in Spanish-inspired gowns to fully-sheer silhouettes. Anything and everything is fair game as long as it spells romantic. I see boudoir and lingerie-inspired looks, 3D florals and heavy beadings that hark back to the opulence of a distant past. In white to blush pink, in a long train, on a longer cathedral veil that oozes romance.”

What are your inspirations from this season’s bridal collection?

My latest bridal collection is a hodge-podge of inspirations that cater to all kinds of brides. She may be classic, romantic or modern and anything in between. It is my way of reestablishing myself in the local market as I have been based abroad for the past several years. Thankfully, the Filipina brides are inspiring and worth coming back for, and I am staying for good.

Left: ‘This bridal ball gown is a grand new take on a classic silhouette. The elaborate fabrication on silk tulle is highlighted by a bodice that is hand embroidered with silk thread, French pailettes, ceramiques and crystals.’
Right: ‘A neo-modern inspiration on a full-sheer silhouette. This mermaid bridal gown is embellished with embossed thread works and crystal ceramiques.’

What are the usual style requests from your clients?

I make it a point to have an open line with my bride-clients. They just want to look and feel the most beautiful bride on their wedding day. And I am there to make it happen and more…

Kaye Morales

“The trends for grooms this season is all about colors. Grooms no longer just stick with black, white and gray, they now add colors into their wedding attires. The usual requests are blue, hues of brown, and burgundy. They add an accent hue – usually with their pockets, bowtie/necktie to brighten up the outfit – or a mix-and-match of colors in a three-piece suit in different colors. Accessories are also mixed in the overall suit like waistcoat, watch and pocket watch chain.”

What are your inspirations from this season’s wedding collection?

I like to mix and match earth colors or put patterns in the groom’s lining just to break the traditional color that grooms would usually wear before. I want the grooms to stand out by making them wear a different color.

‘This is a gray tuxedo suit from my wedding collection that never leaves the trend and usually what my clients still request for their weddings because the color is very pleasing and can be worn for all different themes of the wedding, whether it is done indoor or outdoor.'

What are the usual style requests from your clients?

My clients usually like gray and not black and light brown if it’s a beach wedding. Usually, I base it on the theme of their weddings – whether they want a traditional morning suit or a cutting-edge tuxedo. I base the color, style and design on their personality.
