Louboutin’s jeepney-inspired bags

Manila’s traffic has inarguably killed many Filipinos’ productive hours—time better spent on much worthwhile endeavors than on idly awaiting for the vehicles to move, even if for a few meters. But this daily struggle of citizens in the Philippine capital has sparked an idea in international French designer Christian Louboutin to create bags that capture our vibrant culture and heritage.

Early this month, the luxury leather goods label unveiled MANILACABA, its latest bag design that’s part of the limited edition collection of tote bags, dubbed “Treasure Totes.”

According to a statement, Christian Louboutin, stuck in Manila traffic jam, was stunned by the expansive joy flowing around. Our colorful and shiny jeepneys caught his attention; it is said the designer related to the joyful style and vibrant decorations of these public transport vehicles.

Manilacaba totes are a nod to our jeepneys

MANILACABA celebrates this light-hearted atmosphere. On the front of the tote, sequins and cotton threads are embroidered into a playful wink to the crowded jeepneys, which are also referenced on the lining of the bag in an eye-popping pattern that transcribes Manila’s passionate lifestyle.

Inside, Christian designed small jeepneys with different destinations, like Manila and Makati. Symmetrical patterns of interwoven colors rekindle the joyful brightness of Filipino designs while the designer’s name delicately stands at the center of artful vegetal embroideries, distinctive of traditional costumes.

Around the central red frame, iridescent sequins are sewn into an eye-catching arrangement recalling the radiance of the Philippines’ Mother of Pearl. The Caba’s handles carry Christian Louboutin’s signature spikes, adding a bold statement to the bag.

MANILACABA is available in two limited edition versions: Denim Blue and Black Satin.

Christian Louboutin with GREAT Women partners

Louboutin’s MANILACABA was created in partnership with GREAT (Gender Responsive Economic Action for the Transformation of Women) Women in Asean. It is made of indigenous textiles and other materials, and features traditional weaving techniques done by women artisans and weavers in small communities and tribes.

“Designing the side panels with Christian was a rich experience,” shared Jeannie Javelosa, co-founder of the GREAT Women in Asean initiative.

She continued, “The pattern Christian elaborated for them was new for the artisans who were used to weaving traditional motifs with this technique. But when we saw the encounter of tradition and creativity happened on the fabric, we thought: how interesting, we should have done this before!”

French designer Christian Louboutin was inspired by the vibrant and diverse culture and heritage of the Philippines

“I have always been captivated by the Philippines’ beauty: the perfect combination of sparkles, Mother of Pearl, and shells. But this project really started to make sense to me when I discovered the richness and the quality of craftsmanship the GREAT Women in Asean artisans were able to develop,” enthused Christian Louboutin.

The MANILACABA is available on Christian Louboutin website for $1,590. For every bag purchased, 10 percent will be donated to the GREAT Women in Asean initiative.

The French designer also created a limited edition Piloutin clutch, inspired by the natural wonders of the Philippine seas. The clutch bags are made with brilliant Swarovski crystals and pearlescent shells. He also designed Artemistrap that goes with the Piloutin. Only 10 Piloutin bags and 10 Artemistraps are available worldwide.
