Jeans from work to workout

As if we needed any more reason to love denim jeans, the durable, comfy, and figure-flattering fashion staple we can never get enough of is also flexible in more ways than one. Using ultra-stretchable and quick dry denim, Freego recently unveiled its Yoga Jeans, a denim innovation that gives wearers the stretchy yet snug look and feel of workout tights or leggings.

Available in four stylish washes (from the light-colored acid to the dark blue enzyme and rinse, and the dressy black), Freego Yoga Jeans are a godsend to women whose daily schedules take them from power meetings and lunches to “me time” alone or bonding with the girls over coffee.

Sporting acid wash Yoga Jeans with a white blouse during the launch, Daisy Go, president of Magnifico Jeans, Inc., has also worn her pair to outdoor shoots and other occasions that require her to move around a lot.

“When I go on long-haul flights, I want to wear something that gives me the comfort of a pair of jogging pants or pajamas—but I also don’t want to look sloppy when I arrive at 2 am.” Go’s jeans have also retained their shape despite numerous wears and trips to the laundry. “They’ve been washed four times already and they still look good,” she says. “And you don’t need to iron them. They’re very easy to maintain; just roll them up and pack them in your suitcase.”

The jeans come in low-waist slim-cut jeggings and regular super-skinny fit jeans, both of which hug the body like second skin. Apparently, it’s a silhouette that appeals to Pinays. “The slim fit is very popular among Filipinas,” avers Go. With their relaxed shape and low-crotch style, boyfriend jeans may be comfy but it also takes a certain body type to pull them off. “You can look short and fat in them, whereas skinny jeans can be slimming,” says Go.

Of course, Freego doesn’t call them Yoga Jeans for nothing; prior to the launch, Go sent samples out for yoga teachers to road test. “It’s very interesting,” says Yoga+ Express teacher Karen Ann Demot, who led a 30-minute Vinyasa Flow yoga session for beginners during the launch. “I’ve never taught yoga in jeans before and it was comfier than I expected.”

Guiding the class through downward facing dog, planks, cobra, and lunges, Demot says the jeans moved with her but didn’t ride up or needed constant adjusting and tugging. “They’re also a little thicker than the usual leggings. I like how they support you and help you keep your form and posture,” she adds.

While not necessarily meant for the gym, these jeans can certainly do the job should you suddenly forget to pack your usual workout gear. “It’s all about multi-functionality,” says Go of the versatile apparel. “At an age when things are designed for more than one purpose, these jeans are perfect.”
