New Year is one of the most awaited days by many primarily because it marks a new beginning and symbolizes a fresh start. But beyond the festivities and all the metaphors associated with the changing of the calendar, the other thing that makes this occasion special is the many delicious treats served in welcoming another 365 days (366 this time) of our lives.

The significance of the day is apparent in the meals we prepare to celebrate it. Because it’s special, the food are tastier, more colorful, and, often, more sinful. We know it’s been weeks since 2016 started, but let’s spoil ourselves a little more and check out the sumptuous and “heart-worthy” photos of different kinds of food served on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day. It’s uncommon to serve yam and egg for New Year here in the Philippines but being a breakfast staple in some African countries, this Instagram account, which features cuisines of Africa, thought it was best to start 2016 with this iconic meal.

The dish is pretty simple. It is made of yam – a mashed and boiled orange-fleshed sweet potato – and egg which adds another layer of taste to the dish. It can be served in different ways depending on your style: with egg spread over the yam, side by side on the same plate, or on different plates.

The account treats its over 41,000 followers everyday to many yummy African food photos. According to the account manager, Africanfood Yummy will soon be selling African food to the public to let more people taste the delicious African cuisine.

Amanda Le sure knows how to start the year on a sweet and healthy note, as she posted the truly “Instagrammable” Vanilla Frosted Brownies on the first day of the new year. The Los Angeles-based self-taught raw foodist posts on her IG account plant-based food that can be enjoyed by vegan and non-vegan alike.

Le’s #newyearfood photo invites everyone to make some changes and try out the vegan lifestyle. And we have to agree, this raw dessert that probably tastes as delicious as it looks, is “a great way to start.”

Healthy and colorful desserts dominate her Instagram account, which currently has 199,000 followers. She also offers recipes for some of the food she posts.

Citizens of Instagram are introduced to a South Asian dessert gulab jamun, which was posted by Boston-based chef Gita Kantrow, on New Year’s day. It is made of powdered milk, a pinch of all-purpose flour, baking powder and clarified butter, and is deep fried and soaked in simmering sugar syrup. This milk solids-based dessert is part of the holiday celebration in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The images of food posted on Chef Gita’s IG account, which has 310 followers as of this writing, are available on her Kantrow Catering Service. Apart from desserts, she also features a wide variety of dishes. Sautéed collard greens with bacon fat, anyone?
