The health benefits of washing dishes

But according to a recent study conducted by Florida State University, washing dishes and doing so mindfully has real therapeutic benefits, particularly in relieving emotional tension. This study revealed that doing simple, everyday activities—like washing dishes—could help encourage person’s a state of mindfulness, which has been linked to improved well-being, reduced levels of stress, and even a strong immune system.  

This study was conducted among 51 college students.  Half of the participants were instructed to clear their minds and pay attention to the sensations they were experiencing while washing the dishes, like the temperature of the water, the feeling of the suds, and the smell of the soap, etc. The other participants, or the control group, were simply told to just get the job done. 

The findings were very significant. The students who learned about the mindful approach reported a 25 percent increase in mental stimulation after washing dishes while also lowering their level of nervousness by 27 percent. The control group, on the other hand, experienced no such benefits.

The study thus shows washing dishes mindfully may be a convenient and affordable form of therapy.
