Philippine Team Places Third at National Model United Nations in NY

Consular and diplomatic students from over 200 universities and colleges from around the world convened at the recent National Model United Nations (NMUN) held in New York City.

The Philippines was represented by De La Salle University (DLSU), University of the Philippines (UP), and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB).

The 28-member delegation of DLS-CSB, headed by School of Diplomacy and Governance (SDG) Dean George Binay, together with students Anton Miguel Valde and Adrianne Mariae P. Evangelista, ranked Third overall, and received the award as Honorable Mention Delegation.

The National Model United Nations, sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association in the United States, is considered to be the biggest annual Model United Nations. It serves as an opportunity to bring together the next generation of international student-leaders from colleges and universities. During the weeklong event, participants represent different countries in activities that simulate the operations within the United Nations. The closing ceremony is traditionally held at the UN Headquarters, graced by top officials behind the organization’s success.

Benilde’s contingent represented Mexico during the simulation.

Various position papers that the Benildeans presented in the following committees also received distinction as Outstanding Position Papers: General Assembly First Committee (GA1),General Assembly Third Committee (GA3), High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), Commission for Social Development (CSocD), United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and World Food Programme (WFP).

Dean Binay shared “We congratulate everyone for their bravery and tenacity to overcome their limitations, most especially our delegates who have no prior experience whatsoever. It was an uphill climb but we all made it.”
