What is a “silent party”? It’s a kind of party where people wear headsets instead of dancing to loud music on the speakers while the DJ is playing his tracks. Story goes that an early reference to “silent” or “quiet” party originated from a page in the 1969 Finnish science-fiction film Ruusujen Aika (A Time of Roses) where people would wear headsets during a party. Fast forward to 2005, the term “silent disco” was introduced by a music festival in Britain and Oxford Dictionary Online entered the term to its database in 2011. Today, it has become trendy to hold “silent parties” whether in a club or during a special event. Some hipsters even use it to avoid producing too much noise that their parents might hear while they’re partying.
If you haven’t been to one, this might be a good time to experience it as Sony Philippines will hold a series of “Silent Parties” in Metro Manila from now until March 2016. Part of the campaign is to launch Sony’s youthful and powerful Xtra Bass line-up of headphones, and the company is partnering with industrial underground club Black Market to hold the events.

As a global leader and innovator, we at Sony offer only the best in personal audio technology, and through this partnership, we will complement the party experience that Black Market is known for and elevate it to a whole new level,” said Nobuyoshi Otake, president and managing director of Sony Philippines.
The Silent Party concept follows the same format as Sony’s ground-breaking Silent Concert held in 2014. If you’re an outsider, a party like this will seem like a lot of people dancing and thumping in zero music. It might be fun to put on a pair of Sony headphones on-site where the sound of the music will be directly transmitted so you can experience the in-your-ear party event.
“The Silent Party is meant to give music fans a deeper appreciation of the music. By delivering the sound straight to Sony’s Xtra Bass headphones, listeners are guaranteed a more upbeat and heart-thumping listening experience unlike anything they’ve heard before,” said Cel Anolin, product manager, Personal Audio, Sony Philippines.
The scheduled parties will be played by Manila’s celebrated underground DJs – The Zombettes, Skratchmark, Italo, Yana, Vince Pante and David Sorrenti including resident DJs such as Erick Ong “Mulan,” Red Lintag, Red-I, Angelo Mendez, PJ Martinez, Don P and Astrid Reyes “Soulflower.” The music will be a variety of sounds ranging from hip-hop to house and even jazz.
“We are a home to a lot of Manila’s music heads, and we’re proud to have Sony as our partner in showcasing their talents in this unique set-up. Black Market massive will definitely enjoy this experience,” said Anna Sobrepeña-Ong, managing partner of Black Market.
The DJs will be equipped with his or her own Sony MDR-1A headphones while the guests can choose either the MDR-XB450AP or the MDR-XB450BV from Sony’s Extra Bass line-up when listening to the featured artists. Made for loud blasting music and equipped with the newly developed Electro Bass Booster, listeners can spend hours of superior sound isolation and direct transmission of massive bass sounds.
