Tibet on My Mind: Mariko Jacinto

In her paintings of “what might soon be gone,” Filipino-Japanese artist and monk Mariko Jacinto expresses her deep empathy for Tibet where political strife between the monks and the Chinese government has endangered the continuity and sanctity of age-old Buddhist practices.
The solo show, featuring Jacinto’s latest series, is a statement and a warning of things to come. She depicts the turmoil in Tibet with bold strokes and thick impastos of oil on canvas. Each painting uniquely and clearly evokes fear, isolation, and a yearning for serenity that the artist feels for the Tibetan natives.

A print journalist for seven years and a photographer for three, Giselle Kasilag celebrates her love for words and images in her second solo photography exhibition the features 10 photographs for which Kasilag made possible narratives based on her imagination sparked by each visuals.
Each photo on exhibit was taken on her trips to Zurich, Barcelona, Singapore and Kyoto. Apart from photos with text, also included in the series are photos of urban scenes and the subcategory Tres, each piece of which is composed of three complementing images printed on instant film.

Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra: Henrik Schaefer

Leading the second show of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2015-2016 concert season is world-renowned German conductor Henrik Schaefer. Program of the one-night concert includes the music of Emilie Mayer’s Ouverture to Faust Op. 46, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3.
A sought-after Wagner conductor, Schaefer’s repertoire includes all the great Mozart operas as well as the romantic Italian and French operas. He has appeared as guest conductor at the operas in Leipzig, Rouen, Chemnitz, Seoul, the Opera Hedeland, the Norrlands Opera, the Hong Kong Opera and the Opera of Gothenburg.

A Joyful Noise! A Thanksgiving Concert

Following their successful stint at the 28th International Concert Tour of Europe, the University of Santo Tomas Singers, under the baton of its conductor Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang Jr., stages a thanksgiving concert on Saturday.
During their concert tour, the 32-member ensemble bagged the top prize at the 4th Florence International Choir Festival. Consequently, this concert will also serve as a send-off for the Catholic university’s premier mixed choir as they embark on another concert tour of South Korea and as a guest artist at the Busan International Choir Festival and Competition and the Daegu International Choir Festival.

The Joy of Improv

Ready to learn the art of improv (improvisational theater)? SPIT’s improvisational theater school Third World Improv, offers its first level one classes for people who are curious about improv. No theater and performing arts experience is required to enroll in “The Joy of Improv” composed of eight three-hour classes on Wednesday nights starting October 7, led by Ariadne Cristobal.
For actors and performers who want to inject more spontaneity, quick thinking and deep listening into their acting skills, Dingdong Rosales is leading “The Playful Stage,” where there will be eight three-hour classes on Saturday afternoons beginning October 10.
