I have to admit I’ve been stuck in a hair rut, sporting the “Lumbersexual Man” bun and beard look for a couple of months now. It has been a trend for the past year and very easy to achieve but I have to confess it’s partly because I’ve been too lazy to style my hair and don’t like having hair or products on my face when I do physical activities. While I do think I could somehow pull off the mountain man look, it’s not for everyone (as I observed at the gym the other day with countless guys sporting baby ponytails). It can be a little Steven Seagal-ish and not in good way. Just so I don’t run the risk of looking like a hermit, a change was in order. The new hairstyling trends for men are all about celebrating the natural texture of a dude’s tresses. While pompadours and pomades are still very much chic, styling the hair in a less structured manner is the look that dominates the runways for the next few seasons.
THE CUT:
Jing Monis, owner and Creative Director of the chain of Jing Monis Salons, allowed me to try the services of his newest venture called M (which stands for Monis Men’s), a well-curated barber shop which opens in October at the B Hotel in Quezon City. Jing describes the new men’s haircuts for fall as a “low fade with disconnection.” This means that the sides and back are kept short with longer hair on top but with more movement and texture. Jing adds that “texture can also be achieved by keeping the bangs long and adding highlights for extra definition.”
THE STYLES:
Aveda Guest Artist Frank Rizzieri created the look for the ultimate suburban teen with a cool-boy tousled mass of texture and volume for the Richard Chai Men’s show. To defiant individuality, Frank Rizzieri created a classically untidy style that showcased the hair’s natural texture and movement. “I used the Thickening Tonic to bring about a spirited and youthful fullness to the hair, and then the Grooming Cream and Control Paste gave the look an edge with a cool, tousled style.”
How To Get The Look
Step 1: Prep towel-dried hair with the new Aveda Thickening Tonic by spraying thoroughly from roots to ends, in sections. Comb through to distribute evenly.
Step 2: Blow-dry hair with fingers.
Step 3: Emulsify a coin-sized dollop of Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Cream and gently massage into hair.
Step 4: Sculpt into a tousled style and define the look further with a small amount of Aveda Men Control Paste.
Aveda‘s Global Artistic Director for Hair Styling, Allen Ruiz, focused on an arresting hair texture that put each model in the spotlight for Public School’s recent men’s collection. Allen Ruiz embraced each model’s natural texture and style. The look is a modern version of the pompadour, with much more movement, volume and less “helmet-head” than we’ve seen in the past few seasons.
How To Get The Look
Step 1: Prep towel-dried hair with the new Aveda Thickening Tonic by spraying thoroughly from roots to ends, in sections.
Step 2: Comb through to distribute evenly.
Step 3: Blow-dry hair with fingers.
Step 4: Emulsify a dime-size dollop of Aveda Men Pure-Formance Grooming Cream between the palms of the hand and gently massage into hair.
Step 5: Take a small amount of Aveda Men Pure-Formance Pomade to mold the hair into the desired style.
Step 6: Set with a light misting of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
