Ex-Samar mayor shot; two killed

Tacloban City―Ananias Rebato, the former mayor of San Jose De Buan, Samar, remained in critical condition while one of his bodyguards was declared dead after they were ambushed by unidentified gunmen while attending a fiesta celebration early morning Monday.

Police identified Rebato’s bodyguard as Severino Tesoro, 24, who was able to retaliate and killed one of the four assailants before he died.

A manhunt led to the arrest of one suspected gunman, while the two remaining assailants are still at-large, police said.

The 57-year-old former mayor is currently undergoing necessary medical treatment at Eastern Visayas Medical Center in the City after sustaining several wounds in various parts of his body.

Rebato, who is rumored to run in the 2019 local elections, served as mayor from 2007 to 2016.
