Mayor John Rey Tiangco has signed an agreement with the beneficiaries of the NavotaAs Ulirang Pamilyang Mangingisda Scholarship Program.
Five relatives, up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity, of the 2018 Top Ten Outstanding Fisherfolk are now eligible to receive educational assistance from the city government.
The first batch of Ulirang Pamilyang Mangingisda scholars included Rhea Garnodo and Lenz Edrick Sabino of Brgy. Tanza 1; April Rose Santiago and Apple Udarbe of Brgy. Tangos South; and Nathaniel Mongolian of Brgy. Sipac-Almacen.
“We want to give the children and other family members of our registered fisherfolk a fair chance to realize their goals and achieve their dreams through quality education without the burden of financial instability,” Tiangco said.
Under the agreement, Navotas will provide the scholars with P16,500 transportation and food allowance as well as P1,500 book stipend per academic year.
Scholars, on the other hand, are expected to maintain good grades and conduct; maintain good health and physical fitness, and provide services to the city government, if necessary.
The city government established the NavotaAs Scholarship Program in 2011. The program initially covered students who excelled in academics and teachers who wanted to pursue graduate studies.
In 2016 and 2017, athletic and art scholarships were added to the list.
Since the scholarship program began, the city government was able to send to school 291 academic scholars, 293 athletic scholars, and 19 art scholars.
