Be better, new Navotas village officials dared

Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco led the mass oathtaking of the newly-elected officials of the city’s 18 barangays recently at the Navotas Sports Complex Thursday.

Tiangco challenged them to be good role models and be the agents of change in their respective barangays.

“As leaders, we should set a good example to our constituents. Whenever we perceive or encounter a problem, let us be the first to take action,” he said.

Tiangco also reminded them that public service is laborious and not for the faint-hearted.

“Being a public servant is not easy. There is always someone needing your help. Even so, no hardship can diminish the sense of fulfillment you get knowing you have eased someone’s burden and made their life better,” he said.

Tiangco, who have been mayor of Navotas for eight years now, said he was initially hesitant to run for office in 2010.

However, his mind changed after becoming a member of the School Governing Council in one of the city’s public elementary schools and seeing the needs of the education sector.

“The experience changed my views in life and made me grateful for what I have. It also inspired me to become more compassionate with others and to help them in whatever way I can,” he said.

“I know we have different reasons for running for office, but I hope your top motivation is your concern for our fellow Navoteños,” he added.
