Mayor John Rey Tiangco challenged newly elected Sangguniang Kabataan officials in Navotas to be good role models and inspire their fellow youth.
In his speech during the SK mandatory training, Tiangco said youth leaders should lead by example.
“Before you encourage others to play a part in solving a problem or an issue, be the one to take the first step,” Tiangco said.
“If the problem is the increasing number of out-of-school youth, make sure you are in school and attending classes religiously. If the problem is garbage disposal, be the first to practice waste segregation and proper disposal. Be the solution,” he added.
The SK mandatory training, spearheaded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government Navotas Field Office and the Navotas City Council for Youth Development, was in line with the implementation of Republic Act No. 10742 or the SK Reform Act.
According to RA 10742, failure to attend and participate in the training without any valid reason shall be considered as sufficient ground to disqualify SK officials or subject them to disciplinary actions.
Navotas held the training in two batches on May 22 and 23.
Nine barangays including San Rafael Village, North Bay Blvd. South Proper, NBBS Kaunlaran, NBBS Dagat-Dagatan, North Bay Blvd. North, Bangkulasi, Bagumbayan South, Bagumbayan North, and Navotas East composed the first batch.
The second batch included Brgys. Daanghari, Navotas West, San Jose, San Roque, Sipac-Almacen, Tangos North, Tangos South, Tanza 1 at Tanza 2.
“You were elected because your fellow Navoteño youth believed in what you can do for your respective barangays. Prove them right. Make their vote count and let your leadership make a mark,” he added.
The training covered decentralization and local governance, SK history and its salient features, legislative procedures such as meetings and creating resolutions, planning and budgeting in barangay level, and code of conduct and ethical standards for public officials and employees.
Tiangco led the oathtaking of the SK officials after the training.
