Health officers in QC to blame for neglecting women–Joy

Quezon City health officials must be held culpable for their neglect to improve health services for their women constituents, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

On Wednesday, Belmonte led QC’s first “women and health” forum at the New Capitol Estate in Barangay Batasan Hills to promote various health programs of the Health department to residents, women health workers and volunteers, and to directly hear their concerns on health issues such as reproductive health.

“When I go to the communities, I’ve been hearing complaints from the women about the lack of (health) services they should have been receiving, and how they can avail them, so I decided to have this health forum,” she lamented.

“It’s important that we do what we are saying, and that we know the other needs of our people,” the vice mayor said.

About 700 women took part in the forum, and were asked to fill out survey forms to enable the city government to gauge their awareness and knowledge about the city’s health programs.

“Now, I want to validate if how many of them were able to avail of the services, and if not, we will have to hold accountable our health officials,” Belmonte warned.

“Do they lack funds or personnel? Is there a lack of information dissemination [campaign]? We want to know all that,” she said.

According to Belmonte, the objective of the city government is to find and dissect such problems, and to provide solutions for the public’s health and well-being.

“The human immunodeficiency virus epidemic, [and] reproductive health, these are two relevant issues here in Quezon City that we should seriously look into,” she said.

According to Belmonte, daughter of former mayor and 4th District Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr., she has started going down to the city’s 142 barangays to check if the residents, especially women, regularly receive the various health services of the health department.

She said the city government has also started preparations for the observance of the women’s month in March, adding women play a vital role in the society.
