Davao looking to build tribal cultural center

Davao City—The City Government of Davao looks forward to a bigger tribal village in the future that will showcase the culture of the 11 tribes of the city.

City Tourism Operations Office head Gene Rose Tecson said Davao is now targeting a cultural center structure that will preserve and showcase the culture of city’s indigenous peoples.

“In the future, what we hope is to really have a Kadayawan tribal village that is huge where we can really set up a cultural center, and instead of just one house per tribe maybe we can make it a small community,” Tecson said.

The city is now looking for a property where the cultural center can be built, she added.

The Kadayawan Village has attracted local and international tourists and has become a tourist destination in the city.

“The NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) is very much interested with the tribal village and they want to turn it into a hub for culture and peace,” Tecson said.

Currently, the tribal village is located inside Magsaysay Park, with a house showcasing each tribe.

Tecson said the Kadayawan Village has improved significantly a year after it was established. This year, visitors have more interaction with the tribal “residents” and can even try their traditional clothes.

After its establishment during last year’s Kadaywan Festival, the village has become a primary tourist destination in the city, she said.

It also exhibits how peaceful Davao City is through the unity of the 11 tribes.
