Couple dies in Batangas house blast

Santo Tomas, Batangas—A couple died after a homemade bomb exploded in their home at the Madison Garden subdivision in Barangay San Roque here just before noon on Monday.

Sto. Tomas police chief Supt. Harold Depositar named the casualties as Joy Sorima and Jerwin Salazar.

Their five-year-old child, Jorel Salazar, is still being treated for injuries at the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, he added.

In a dzMM radio interview, Calabarzon police director Chief Supt. Edward Carranza said the explosion happened at a residential area being used as an illegal factory of improvised blasting caps.

Police said they found Jorel outside the family’s home. No one else was hurt as the house was in a far corner of the subdivision, but the blast was strong enough to shatter the glass windows of nearby three-story building, which was empty at the time, investigators added.

Depositar said they found about a thousand blasting caps and rolls of fuse believed to be used as detonators.

“They’re like cable wires that are similar to those normally used in quarrying and illegal fishing,” the local police chief said. Police have yet to say if the couple was involved in these activities.
