TUGUEGARAO CITY—Ten women who excelled in various fields of profession and vocation were recently honored by the Philippine Information Agency as part of its yearly “Iddu,” an Ybanag term for “loved one.”

Puria Licas, PIA regional director said the event which is part of the Women’s Month celebration last month provides a simple recognition of the efforts of women in Cagayan Valley region.

“These are the women in Cagayan the PIA has covered all these years. The agency has been a witness to some of their successes and struggles in their quest for countryside development,” she said.

Conducted at the Hotel Carmelita Events Place, the ‘Iddu’ awards recognized the following women:

Engineer Noralyn Busa, an employee of the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Agriculture Office for her dedication and commitment in serving farmers and the environment;

Emilia Fernandez, a fossilized flower magnate in Quirino province;

Estrella Langcay of Tuguegarao City, who exemplified her volunteerism as Barangay Health Worker in her community;

Kristina Maria Meman, a medicine student of Cagayan State University and an advocate for volunteerism;

Dr. Zsa Zsa May Meneses of Tuguegarao City, who was known as Doctor of the Masses;

Jail Chief Inspector Juliet Mabborang-Miranda of Aparri District Jail who performs her role as public servant even beyond steel bars, caring for the orphaned children;

Grace Barbano-Ruiz, a community development specialist of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority in Sta. Ana, Cagayan who helped in the development of economic life of the Aeta tribe; and Fire Chief Inspector Joanne Vallejo of Cauayan City, Isabela for her initiative in bringing in firefighting equipment, training and facilities for her staff and community volunteers as effective partner on fire prevention and suppression.

While the awardees came from various fields of endeavor, Licas said they have one thing in common—the development of themselves, their families and their respective communities.

“May the stories of these women become not only an inspiration to all of us, men included, but likewise a mirror to reflect upon ourselves how in our own little way, we can contribute to the totality of progress and development in our ever-changing society,” she said.

The ‘Iddu’ Awards in Cagayan Valley was started in 2012 to give awards and recognition to deserving women in the region especially during the Women’s Month celebration.

Licas said it is a paperless award without nomination forms to fill up and other documents to submit and the selection was revolutionary in the sense that those selected to be recognized were women who have been national awardees themselves at one point or another in their careers.

“As long as these women played significant roles in the lives of their fellow women and the society in general, they deserve to be recognized,” she added.

The pioneer awardees were Milagros Rimando on government service, Jovita Ayson on law enforcement, Urduja Tejada on technology, Licas on media, Olivia Pascual on local governance, Excelsis De Leon on social services, Mildred Abella on agriculture, Cely Baltazar on agricultural research and Marita Mondejar on tribal governance.
