Car sales down 14% in May–industry data

Philippine automotive sales declined 13.7 percent in May to 30,620 units from 35,469 units year-on-year.

Month-on-month sales, however, increased 19.7 percent from 25,583 units in April.

Consolidated data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. and Truck Manufacturers Association showed sales rebounded from a 9.3-percent decline month-on-month in April.

Except for the passenger car sales that dropped 5.1 percent on the month, all other segments registered a healthy performance.

Sales of commercial vehicles posted a hefty increase of 35.4 percent to 21,219 units from the April sales of 15,673 units.

Light commercial vehicles posted the biggest growth of 36.7 percent to 15,095 units from 11,045 units.

Sales of Asian utility vehicles jumped 33.9 percent to 4,606 units, followed by light trucks which rose 31 percent to 760 units. Sales of the trucks and buses category IV gained 2.3 percent to 485 units, while those of trucks and buses category V surged 57.8 percent to 273 units.
