The Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance on Thursday urged the government to slowly move toward incorporating energy efficiency as a mainstream resource in planning the energy mix.

PE2  president Alexander Ablaza also promoted energy efficiency as a new infrastructure asset class in the energy market.

“Eventually, energy efficiency should be planned as a resource in any country’s energy mix. Our economy needs to mobilize $243 billion in energy efficiency capital to harvest 45,900 megawatts from the demand-side of the Philippine energy market in the next 21 years,” Ablaza said in a statement following an energy panel discussion of the Philippines Infrastructure Conference on Wednesday.

Ablaza also said private capital could be tapped for initial investments in energy efficiency projects hosted by government agencies through expanded procurement regulations that would enable energy service company contracts.

He said the implementing rules and regulations of the Republic Act 11285 also known as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act should provide clear guidelines that would enable the procurement of ESCO contracts for government energy efficiency projects.
