Toyota Tsusho Corp., the trading company of the Toyota Group of Japan, has expressed interest to participate in the 42-megawatt Bago hydro project of Alsons Consolidated Resources Corp. in Negros Occidental province.

Alsons executive vice president Tirso Santillan said Toyota was keen on investing in renewable energy projects, but was aware of the risks in Mindanao, such as the peace and order situation.

“They’ve expressed interest in Bago, which is in Negros. So there will be no issues of risk. They have issues of risk in some areas in Mindanao, Zamboanga and then outside of GenSan, that’s gray area for them although they invested in SEC (Sarangani Energy Corp.),” Alsons executive vice president Tirso Santillan said.

Santillan said Alsons was looking at four sites along the Bago River, with different capacities at each power station.

“Hydropower works on the basis of volume of water and then the drop. The volume plus the drop creates energy, the basis of which you generate power,” the official said.
