Metro Pacific Investments Corp. said a unit earmarked P1 billion to develop biogas facilities for fresh fruits producer Dole Philippines Inc. in Mindanao.

Metro Pacific said in a disclosure to the stock exchange wholly-owned subsidiary Metpower Venture Partners Holdings Inc., through Surallah Biogas Ventures Corp., signed agreements to design, construct and operate biogas facilities specifically for Dole Philippines.

The biogas facilities aim to complement Dole Philippines’ existing operation by processing organic fruit waste from its Surallah and Polomolok facilities in South Cotabato, Mindanao, and harnessing renewable energy in the form of biogas.

SBVC’s facilities will produce about 50,000 megawatt-hour of clean energy annually to be used by Dole Philippines for power generation and fossil fuel substitute.

Both Metro Pacific and Dole Philippines said the long-term project would be an innovative, environment-friendly, and sustainable waste management solution that would further elevates the business tradition of Dole Philippines.

The project is expected to positively impact climate change through carbon dioxide emission reduction of 100,000 tons per year.

Dole Philippines is the world’s largest producer and marketer of high-quality fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and fresh cut flowers with a growing line of quality packaged foods.

Metro Pacific said the project marked first foray in bio-energy and would serve as a catalyst for a highly scalable waste-to-energy platform it planned to build in the Philippines through MVPHI.

The infrastructure conglomerate earlier said it was looking to create a portfolio of waste-to-energy facilities with a generating capacity of 300 MW over the next few years.

Metro Pacific currently has a pending unsolicited proposal to develop a waste-to-energy project in Payatas, Quezon City.

The project which involves the construction of solid waste management facility will have a capacity to handle 3,000 tons of solid waste a day and produce 30 MW to 40 MW of power.  It is now subject to Swiss Challenge.
